The Chinese Arch

West of The Piccadilly Plaze between Portland Street and Moseley Street lies Manchester's thriving Chinatown district. It is recognized as the second largest Chinese community in Britain and the fourth largest in Europe.

If you turn into Nicholas Street, you will encounter the iconic feature of the district, the Imperial Chinese Archway, a gift to Manchester from the Chinese People. It is the only one in Europe and regarded as more decorative than the one in San Francisco. Designed and built by a team of engineers from Peking, it is decorated with ceramics, lacquer, paint and gold leaf.
