The Grosvenor Picture Palace

On the corner of Grosvenor Street and Oxford Road stands the Grosvenor Picture Palace.  It was designed by Percy Hothersall in 1913 and it opened in 1915.  The building is faced with faience and terracotta in green and cream.  As a cinema it was able to accommodate almost 1000 patrons.  As a teenager I came here most Saturdays but not to see films but to play snooker in the billiard hall that existed down in the basement.

GROSVENOR PICTURE PALACE Oxford Road/Grosvenor Street All Saints Opened 19th May 1915. 1,100 seats. By 1941: (BTP) - Props., New Grosvenor (Manchester). Today the building is occupied by a pub called "The Footage".  Sportspubs.co.uk says of The Footage:  "One of the first bars within Manchester student land as you travel out from the city centre, the Footage is an old cinema that boasts two massive screens and a balcony that opens up for the major events. They have church style pews and a raucous atmosphere for the big games that is combined with late opening hours and regular dancing on the tables. The main criticism is that it is a nightmare trying to buy a drink during the match without straining your neck"
