Apsley Cottage

The Apsley Cottage pub sits on Apsley Grove behind the 02 Apollo.  This rather grand little building has an odd name which can be explained by reference to the 1845 map of the area.  The corner of Stockport Road and Hyde Road, where the Apollo stands today, was occupied in 1845 by Apsley House (A on the map below).  Beside Apsley House was Apsley Place (marked B on the map), a block which appears to be composed of three houses.  The pub's name clearly comes from the former occupants of the site and it may be that the building is a remnant surviving from these older buildings.  I have placed a red arrow on the map to indicate the building which might be the Apsley Cottage pub today.
