New
Oxford Pub
The New
Oxford pub occupies a corner site in Bexley Square
across from the former Salford Town Hall. It
is described as, "A three-storey public house
.... constructed of brick with a hipped slate
roof. The ground floor is rather plain ... The
windows are sliding sash on the 1st floor, and
combination on the 2nd, all with brick headers."
The "Pubs of Manchester" website says that the pub
dates back to the 1850s and has had a variety of
names along the way including: "The Court Tavern",
"The Amateurs Arms" and the "Oxford Hotel" although
I have been unable to verify this on maps or in
directories of the period. The New Oxford is
one of the few public houses still operating in the
vicinity of Chapel Street in Salford in 2013.
