Islington Park

Islington Park occupies a site close to Chapel Street near the junction with what used to be Irwell Street.  This was once the location of the Irwell Street Chapel and in the grounds of the chapel 17,000 local residents were buried between 1829 and 1858.  According to Methodist Records held by Manchester City Council the Irwell Street Chapel opened in 1826.  It closed its doors for the last time in 1962.

In the park you will find a circular mosaic which was designed by local school children in 1992 to commemorate the fact that the author of the children's classic "The Secret Garden", Frances Hodgson Burnett, lived nearby as a child.  The mosaic has been recently refurbished with the assistance of some of the children who helped to created it originally.
