Irwell Street Chapel - Salford

The Irwell Street Wesleyan Methodist Chapel used to sit on the west side of Irwell Street in Salford close to the corner with chapel Street.  It was one of the chapels that formed part of the Manchester and Salford Wesleyan Methodist Mission.  It was apparently founded in 1815.  The map segment below is dated 1849 and shows the chapel with a cemetery behind it and a cemetery chapel.

In 1856 the Methodist Mission built their Central Hall on the corner of Oldham Street and Dale Street (see below).  It became their headquarters.  The building was designed by the architect George Woodhouse.  Unfortunately the building was seriously damaged during the Manchester Blitz in WWII but it was rebuilt in 1953.

The Methodist Central Hall was built on the site of the earlier Oldham Street Chapel which had been opened by John Wesley in 1781.  You can see it on the map segment below, dated 1849.

If you click on the link below you can see the chapel in 1890.
