Joseph Schimschlavitch was born in Belarus.  The family emigrated to the UK in 1890 settling in Manchester and changing their name to Sunlight.  Joseph's father was a cotton merchant.  In 1904 Joseph was apprenticed to a Manchester architect and 3 years later set up his own practice in an office in St. Ann's Square.
