Tour Seven looks at an area that more than any other has changed from industrial dereliction into a trendy people place. This is where the Romans built their fort after which the city is named. Much later the Manchester Ship Canal turned landlocked Manchester into a sea port and the Rochdale & Bridgewater Canals carried goods in and out of the heart of the city. Then the railway came along and strode across the River Irwell and the canals on viaducts. The world's first passenger railway station is still here. When all of this commerce dried up, Castlefield was left as an area of fetid canals and rotting warehouses. It is much change |
