From the outset Belle
Vue was more than a zoo. The Jennison family and
all of those who took over from them made every effort
to attract as many people as possible to the the
gardens. Sports of all kind figured prominently in
the crowd drawing activities. The greyhound
stadium on Kirkmanshulme Lane, the speedway stadium on
Hunters Lane, the Kings Hall and the Athletics
Ground were all pupose built venues serving greyhound
racing, football, speedway, stockcar racing, boxing and
wrestling. However, the gardens were used for a
much more diverse range of sporting activities from Show
Jumping to ice skating, from roller skating to school
sports days. Below is a collection of photographs
taken in the late 1920s early 1930s at Belle Vue, most
of them in the speedway stadium.
