Chetham Cobden Dalton Temple

Temple House

William Temple was born in 1881. He was the second son of Frederick Temple who at the time was Bishop of London. William's father went on to be the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1899. William Temple suffered from health problems all of his life. At the age of two he had his first attack of gout and he continued to be plagued by it throughout his life. He also had poor eyesight. A cataract in his right eye resulted in the complete loss of vision in that eye by the age of 40.

William was at Balliol College, Oxford, from 1900 to 1904, and was the president of the Oxford Union. In 1910, he was ordained as a priest and in 1918 he joined the British Labour Party, and worked actively for it. In 1921 Temple was made Bishop of Manchester. During the General Strike, of 1926, William worked extensively to mediate between the parties, and helped to bring about a settlement.

He excelled, it would seem, not as a scholar, but as a moderator, and above all as a teacher and preacher. He became Archbishop of Canterbury in 1942, in the midst of the Second World War and he worked for the relief of Jewish refugees from Naziism.

On 26 October 1944, William Temple died from complications from the gout that he had suffered from since childhood.

Year-End Report - Boys

Football (Seniors)

Last year's predictions of a good team for this year were fulfilled by the season's play. We won the first two games against Chetham and Dalton easily, but narrowly lost the final game to Cobden. Competent performances were given by Parnell, Jepson, Mee and Richardson.

Football (Juniors)

The team, captained by Stonall, played three excellent games to win the Championship.

Cross-Country

Although we only came second, the team put up a creditable performance, our first five runners finishing in the first 16. Parnell gave a splendid performance to finish second, followed closely by Shirley who finished sixth.

Swimming

Although last year's result was only a disappointing third spirits have not been dampened for this year's Gala. Let us hope that performances given by I(irk, Fell and Richardson will be repeated this year.

Athletics

The boys gained more points than any other house last year, but we were let down by the girls and only managed to finish second, being narrowly beaten by Cobden.

We hope to repeat our performance this year and, with the help of the girls, carry off the Championship.

Five-a-Side

Only one game was played this year, the Juniors beating Dalton by 7 goals to 5.

Year-End Report - Girls

Netball

The Senior team has had rather a disappointing season losing all their three matches. They did, however play with great enthusiasm and enjoyed the competition immensely. The Junior team played extremely well throughout their competition, drawing their games with Chetham and Dalton and beating Cobden 8-1. Thus they were placed second in the competition.

Hockey

The team played well during their matches, beating Cobden and Dalton 5-0 and 4-0 respectively. They lost their final match against Chetham however, and were consequently placed second in the Hockey Championship.

Rounders

The Senior Rounders team are to be congratulated on their efforts in the Rounders competition last year. After narrowly beating Cobden and Dalton they lost to Chetham and thus our final position was joint first. The Juniors also made a noble effort, drawing with Chetham, beating Cobden and losing to Dalton. This placed us in second position.

Athletics

Temple Athletics team was unfortunately unable to repeat the success of 1963. After a very enjoyable, if unsuccessful Sports Day, Temple finished third in the Athletics Championship.

Swimming

Our swimming team was greatly hindered by illness at the time of last year's Swimming Gala, but the girls were very enthusiastic and made a noble effort. After an exciting and enjoyable competition our final position was fourth with 65 points. Mention must be made of the great performance by Stephanie Smith in the 50 yards free style event. Her time was 32.2 secs., breaking the existing record by almost two seconds-a creditable performance!

Temple girls have enthusiasm, but it is hoped that this year, with renewed support from every member of the house we will be able to improve on our position in last year's overall Championship.

JOAN HEYWOOD (6u), House Captain.
