Cobden House

Richard Cobden, was born in Heyshott, near Midhurst, Sussex, on 3rd June, 1804. He was one of eleven children born into the family of a poor farmer. The poverty of the family forced the parents to distribute their children to various relatives and Richard was dispatched to an uncle in Yorkshire, who by all accounts, treated him badly.

With little in the way of education, Richard started work at the age of 14 as a clerk in the textile industry. He went on to become a commercial traveler and later he started his own business. This was followed by a partnership with two other young men in a calico printing company. By 1832 Richard Cobden was a wealthy man living in an affluent part of Manchester.

Cobden's wealth allowed him to travel extensively and his observations prompted him to conclude that Britain was facing a difficult economic future because of the inevitable competition from the emerging economic power of America. In 1835 he published a book on the topic and advocated a policy of free trade, low taxation, reduced military spending and an improvement in our system of education

Cobden became a member of the Manchester Chamber of Commerce in 1837 and with others agitated to achieve a democratically elected local council in Manchester. In 1838 he was one of he first men to be elected as a Manchester alderman.

The fight for Free Trade involved repealing the Corn-Laws which Cobden and his allies regarded as regressive. Across the country Anti-Corn Laws organizations were founded. In March 1839 Cobden was instrumental in establishing a new centralized Anti-Corn Laws League. In the General Election of 1841 Cobden became the M.P. for Stockport. This gave him another venue in which to argue for Free Trade and the abolition of the Corn-Laws. In January 1846 a new Corn Law was passed and Richard Cobden was a national hero. From a personal perspective though his focus on politics had resulted in a significant reversal in his business interests and he was heavily in debt.

In the years that followed Cobden continued his fight for Free Trade and also directed his energies towards working for parliamentary reform and state supported education. Richard Cobden died on 2nd April, 1865, of an acute attack of bronchitis.

Year-End Report - Boys

Last year the house made a grand effort to win the overall Championship for the fourth year in succession. This is a record unequalled by any house since this system was introduced. At the time of going to press the house is leading in this year's overall Championship.

Senior Football

This year Cobden maintained their superiority by winning the Senior Football Championship for the third time in succession. They beat Chetham (8-2), Dalton (4-1) and Temple (5-2).

Among the outstanding players were Thornley, Brown, Franks and Brownhill, Millership showing a few sparks of life by scoring the occasional goal.

Junior Football

The team, captained by Mathews, made a promising start to the season by beating Chetham 2 0, and Dalton 5-3. However by losing to Temple 2-0 the team was placed second in the Championship.

Cricket

The Senior team began the season well by beating Chetham by 6 runs; Cobden scoring 41. In the second match they beat Dalton decisively by 4 wickets and 31 runs. Cobden scored 77 runs for 4 wickets. The last match was a very exciting and close game but Temple finally won by 2 runs to take the Trophy.

The Juniors however improved on our performance by sharing the Trophy with Temple.

Results: v. Chetham Won by 13 runs (Cobden 39) v. Dalton Won by 2 runs and 5 wickets (Cobden 30-5) v. Temple Lost by 3 runs (Cobden 44 runs)

Cross-Country

First with 39 points.

This year Cobden had a resounding victory in this event having five of the team in the first 10 places. Greenhough led the team, coming in first with Forward coming in a close third.

Athletics

In the overall athletics classification Cobden were first. The Senior Relay team won their event after being hard pushed by Temple. Forward was outstanding by winning the intermediate 440 yds. and the open mile.

We are looking forward to a good entry in this year's competition which is being run in the form of trials with the winners competing in the Finals.

Swimming

Having the greatest percentage of swimmers compared with the other houses caused Cobden boys to win the house Swimming Gala for the third year in succession.

Outstanding Performers:

Simpson winning the intermediate 2 lengths breaststroke in 36 secs. (new school record) and the Long plunge.

Royle winning the Senior 2 lengths backstroke and the Neat dive. Cobden also won the Senior squadron in 2 mins. 28.4 sec.-a new school record.

IAN M. FRANKS (6u).

Year-End Report - Girls

Netball

The Senior team have to be congratulated on winning the Netbal1 Championship. They kept up their high standard of play winning their matches against Chetham and Temple, 20 goals to 13 and 17 goals to 4, respectively. Their match with Dalton was a draw- 10 all. They gained five points and the position of first.

Unfortunately the Junior team did not do quite so well, losing all their three games, but mention must be made of their gallant efforts. I hope that they will do better next year and maybe win the Championship.

Hockey

This season the Hockey team did not manage to retain the Championship for a third year. They won their game with Chetham but lost against Dalton and Temple, and the final position was third, despite the enthusiastic effort made by the girls.

Rounders

Last year the Senior Rounders team won only one match and lost the other two. Their position however was joint-second with Chetham, gaining two points. The Junior team also gained two points but their position was third. We hope to improve on these results this year.

Athletics

In the final result of the Girls' events last Sports Day Cobden was second with 75 points. The House did however win the Trophy when the boys' score had been added to ours. We hope that this year, having had the opportunity to train for every event, the entrants will do even better!

Swimming

Again Elizabeth Hawkins captained the team to victory winning the Swimming Trophy with a grand result. The number of swimmers in Cobden is almost one hundred per cent and many are out-standing, so I hope this high standard will continue this year and in future years-I am sure it will.

The excellent results of Cobden House are undoubtedly due to the willingness and enthusiasm of all the members of the teams.

Again this year we are hoping to keep our position and win the overall Championship for the fifth year running!

BARBARA HEYWOOD (6u), House Captain.
