- The Welfare of the Evacuated Children -


The school and its Head, Mr. Peake, had more than the education of the evacuated children to take care of, as these communications show.



Clearly there were children among the Ardwick group who needed help.



Mr Peake responded to Miss Crossley's letter



Miss Lord was obviously on the case too ensuring that the boy's shoes were in good order.





The Education Committee were also involved in the effort to ensure that children had appropriate winter clothing.




Arrangements were made for the parents of evacuated children to pay them a visit. 
However, just like today, things didn't always work out as planned.



The teaching staff were also involved in the distribution of ration books in Bacup.






Some of the children returned to Manchester during holidays, including Christmas.  However, for those who stayed in their reception areas thought was given to giving them a proper Christmas experience.





Catherine Brown was in charge of a number of girls who were evacuated to Macclesfield. Included in that group were two girls from Ardwick Central.  Here is a letter she wrote to Mr. Peake inviting him to attend their Christmas party.  It appears that he sent his regrets because he was going to a Youth Center Party but he passed on his best wishes.





Mr. Peake had party plans of his own for which he solicited the help of the parents.



One of the events that was organized was a party in Bacup for those people who were caring for the Ardwick children.
