Puls 5, Zurich, Switzerland

The Giessereihalle Puls 5 building occupies one side of the Turbinenplatz on the site of the former Escher Wyss Factory.  At first sight it appears to be a modern new build, but as you get closer, it becomes apparent that a modern facade and modern extensions have been wrapped around an old foundry.  Inside, its industrial past becomes obvious.  Today, the building is home to restaurants, retail outlets, a fitness centre, offices, apartments and this vast exhibition/event hall.

The ksa-architeken.ch website explains that, " ... In 1999 three architectural offices presented a proposal for the redevelopment of the site of the former foundry in Zurich. The Office of Planning selected the submission of KSA. One of the reasons for the decision was the integration of the foundry in the overall design. The space is now used for art events, car presentations and more. The success of the planning was based on the cooperation between the owners, authorities, neighbors, cultural institutions and interest groups."
