Löwenbräu Brewery Site, Zurich, Switzerland

This complex of buildings in Zurich West is the former home of the Löwenbräu  Brewery.  Elements of the industrial complex, built in 1897, have been preserved, whilst new buildings have been added.  The project was designed by the Swiss architects Gigon and Guyer and built between 2009 and 2012.

The NBK Architectural Terracotta website explains that, An exciting ensemble of old and new is emerging on the Löwenbräu complex in the west of Zurich, where two new towers rise above the old brewery .... "  At one end of the complex is Löwenbräu White (see above) which (in 2015) is an arts centre that is home to the Kunsthalle Zurich, the Migros Museum of Contemporary Art, Freymond-Guth Fine Arts, as well as the the galleries of: Bob van Orsouw, Eva Presenhuber, Gregor Staiger and Hauser & Wirth.

In the middle is Löwenbräu Black, ".... A black, elegant, 70-metre-high construction, with its striking projection giving it the appearance of a cobra, stands tall behind the old brewery. ....  the Löwenbräu Black – is a prominent landmark that redefines the city’s skyline. Simple, but bold in form and dimensions, it rises above the listed brewery, and yet its striking projection serves to enrich this historic building. The design is complemented by the cladding with its black-glazed, highly projecting, undulating ceramic plates."

At the end is Löwenbräu Red, an office complex that comprises the listed main brewery building from 1897 and a nine-storey extension. "...  With its striking red-glazed, undulating ceramic plates, the façade reinterprets the typical colour of the existing brick building and is a real eye-catcher even at a distance."  Just beyond the railway line are the original steel silos.
