The architect's
website says that they were, "commissioned to develop designs
for a unique opening footbridge between
the proposed Media City development for
the BBC at Salford Quays and The Imperial
War Museum of the North. The bridge has a
dramatic curved form which responds to the
radial masterplan of the site and which
will form an integral part of an orbital
pedestrian route around the Canal basin.
The steel bridge deck is supported along
one edge by a series of stay cables which
transfer loads to a distinctive fanned
mast."
It is a project of the Northwest Regional
Development Agency. Their website says
this about it, "The £11m
bridge, funded by the NWDA, will be a
spectacular addition to the Salford Quays
skyline and will provide better access and
encourage extra footfall around Trafford
Wharf and through to Trafford Park, the
Lowry, MediaCityUK, Imperial War Museum
North and Old Trafford football and
cricket grounds."
Steven
Broomhead, Chief Executive of the NWDA,
said: “The bridge not
only looks spectacular but it will be an
important channel for improving access
and connectivity to MediaCityUK and
across the Quays.”
