New Islington Footbridge, Manchester, UK

Architect
Gollifer Langston Architects
Date Built
2012
Location
Linking Ancoats to New Islington
Description
This new footbridge crosses the Rochdale Canal at the point where a new extension of the waterway has been built to carry boats into the New Islington water park.  Because of its location, the bridge has an unusual configuration.   From Redhill Street the bridge forks left and right to both banks of the new canal.

The architect's website says that, "The design aims to create an intriguing addition to complement the historic canal side warehouses of Ancoats and the contemporary architecture of the new development. The footbridge is designed to run over the Rochdale Canal connecting three crossing points with limited clearances in a fluid and economical structure. The truss is the bridge’s main structural support and is clad using a bespoke perforated metal design."
