Northumbria
University's City East Campus occupies an
old brownfield site bordered on one side by
railway lines and the A167M and on the other
by Falconar Street. The "20th Century Architecture in Newcastle" website features an article about the campus written by Paula McHale, Emma Milnes, Finola Lundgren, Cath Wheater. In the article they explain that one of the main aims of this project was, in their view, "to make a big architectural statement about sustainability, regeneration and the importance of education." If that was the case, it certainly has resulted in a bold and impressive building. The architects, Atkins, explain that, " ... the design is configured to enhance natural ventilation, reduce glare, control solar gain, and be thermally efficient." To do this they wrapped the building in, "a double layer of metalic solar shading devices with glass, metal cladding and other translucent materials, giving the impression of a rippled, pleated and folded fabric skin. ... encapsulating the building as a veil and giving it its distinctive appearance." The
campus is made up of two blocks that
curve around each other with a walkway
between them.
One
houses the Design School and the other
the Law and Business Schools.
