Description

This amazing museum building is located beside the entrance to the Daimler factory in Stuttgart.

The museum's Wikipedia page says that, "... The building's height and "double helix" interior were designed to maximise space, providing 16,500 square metres of exhibition space on a footprint of just 4,800 square metres. The double helix also corresponds to the exhibition concept, which divides the museum into the 'myth rooms' and the 'collections', offering two alternative tours that can be merged at any given point of the museum."

The museum takes the visitor through the history of transportation from the horse to the latest concept car and puts every development into the context of events around the world.

The museum experience begins with an elevator ride inside the vast open atrium at the heart of the building.  The futuristic elevator pod carries the visitor to the top of the building where the story begins.

The archtects say on their website that, "...The Museum’s sophisticated geometry synthesizes structural and programmatic organizations resulting in a new landmark building celebrating a legendary car. The geometric model employed is based on the trefoil organization. The building’s program is distributed over the surfaces which ascend incrementally from ground level, spiraling around a central atrium. The Museum experience begins with visitors traveling up through the atrium to the top floor from where they follow the two main paths that unfold chronologically as they descend through the building. The two main trajectories, one being the car and truck collection and the other consisting of historical displays called the Legend rooms, spiral downwards on the perimeter of the display platforms, intersecting with each other at several points allowing the visitor to change routes."

Using a variety of media and more than 160 vehicles, the descent through the building shows the visitor how world events and changes in social history influenced the developments in public and private transportation.  Guggenheim-like you descend gradually from floor to floor along ramps that are lined with enough intriguing information to fill many days.

The building is also home to cafés, a shop ...

.... and the Mercedes Benz Sales Centre with both current and vintage cars available to view and purchase.
