The architects
of this project, Sadler Brown Architecture,
say on their website that, "Haymarket
Hub was one of the most complex
engineering and construction projects in
the UK, with the foundations and steel
frame being major civil engineering
challenges. It was built with
exceptional organisation and management
skills over and around an operational
railway.
Nexus (the
client) took the opportunity during
this development to redesign the
existing Haymarket Metro station at
the head of Northumberland Street. The
refurbishment is seen as the precursor
for the remainder of the Metro system
stations for the Metro:all change
programme, a reinvigoration programme
to renew stations along the entire
metro network. The proposals are to
update the stations to comply with
current regulations, whilst providing
a further 30 year lifespan. The new
design for Haymarket metro station
opened up the platforms to emphasise
the shape of the tunnels and create a
feeling of space." It would seem that the
author of an article on the ADF Online
website, published in January of 2009,
regards the project as a success.
" ...
the station now has three major
escalators and the under ground
station has been opened out allowing
more natural light in for Metro users.
The old tunnel cladding has been
removed and a new specially designed
fin shaped panel has been fitted
containing all the cables, PA system,
cameras and other electronic wizardry
including signal boosters for mobile
phone and hearing aid users. Other
benefits include non slip floor tiling
and acoustic holes in the new side
panelling to improve sound quality." However, as ever, there have been
detractors and in 2010 an article appeared
in the Evening Chronicle written by Kim
Carmichael reporting that, "A
MULTI-million pound Tyneside
development has been voted one of the
UK’s ugliest new buildings. ... Nominated
for the annual Carbuncle Cup of
“fiendishly ugly buildings”, the hub
is described as “awful” and
“completely out of scale with its
surroundings”. It is also said
to have “no response to the
surrounding environment in terms of
massing, style or materials.” The article goes on to add that the response of Kevin Brown, the director of the Sadler Brown architectural practice, to the nomination was to say that he was, " ...delighted to have been nominated because no architect wants his work to be so dull it goes unnoticed." “It’s great for a successful local practice to be seen on a national stage." “ Over the centuries great architecture has often come under fire only to become loved and cherished years later." |
