Tidal Basin Pumping Station, London

Architect
Richard Rogers Partnership
Date Built
1988
Location
Royal Victoria Dock
Description
This surface water pumping station sits at the corner of Seagull Lane and Tidal Basin Road near the Royal Victoria Dock.  In typical Rogers' style the complex is both colourful and intriguing but also completely functional.  What you see is very much the visible part of the iceberg because the pumping structures extend 25 metres below ground level.  The cylinder on the left above contains the submersible pumping equipment.  The cylinder on the right is part of the maintenance zone.
