Description
|
Nicholas
Grimshaw designed a Sainsbury's Superstore
on a triangular site in Camden Town with
Camden Road on one side, Kentish Town Road
on another and the Grand Union Canal at
the base. The design included a
"terrace" of residential units facing on
to the canal. The architect's
website says that the accommodation
comprises, " ... ten three-bedroom
houses, a one-bedroom maisonette and a
bedsit flat." They add
that, "The tight site and the need
to allow sunlight to penetrate living
areas without recourse to any south
facing windows dictated the form of
the houses; hence the 'L' shaped, open
plan, top lit living space at first
floor level. The houses are built from
dense concrete block work with precast
concrete floors and felt covered
timber roofs pitched at 10 degrees.
Internally, the walls are plastered
and painted white and natural beech is
used for stairs, flooring and other
details."
