One Mabledon Place - London

Architect

Date Built
1970s
Location
Corner of Mabledon Place and Euston Road
Description
This tower on Euston Road was once the home of the public sector trade union Unison.  They moved their headquarters across the road to a new building in 2011.  Unison said prior to the move that, " ... (the) existing building in Mabledon Place is no longer suitable to serve as the head office for the UK's biggest public services union.   Designed and built in the early 1970s, the current building is not able to be adapted to meet the future requirements of the union. And it does not provide enough space for the union's 340 staff to work comfortably and effectively"

The building sat empty until the property developers Stanhope got permission to refurbish it.  They say that, Once the renovation work is completed in 2014, " ... the 11 storey Euston office tower will offer spectacular vistas across central London and north to the hills of Hampstead and Highgate. With King’s Cross St Pancras and Euston Station just yards away, occupiers will be able to catch national rail services, as well as trains to Paris and Brussels.  Stanhope’s CEO, David Camp said earlier this year that the completed building would fulfill  'Stanhope’s commitment to green refurbishment of existing buildings and to reduce energy and other running costs for tenants.'  As part of the Bennett Architects re-design, the property will become better insulated and more energy efficient, so that it can earn a Excellent rating"
