Description
The name Olympic Ice Stadium usually means that a facility is or was a venue at the Winter Olympics but in this case the name seems to come from the fact that it is located on the site of Munich's 1972 Summer Olympics.  The Olympic Park in Munich still contains the various components of their Summer Olympics and many of them are still in regular use. The Olympic Park was located on the site of the former Oberwiesenfeld military airfield.  This ice stadium building was built before work started on the 1972 facilities.  In fact, when work started on it in 1965, the airfield was still operating.

During the 72 Summer Olympics the building was used as the venue for boxing.  The Olympic Park website says that it has been, "... the stage for many enthralling showdowns of Germany’s Ice Hockey Team facing top-class opponents like Russia or Canada, the Czech Republic or Sweden. Over the decades it has also been home ground for the top flight Munich Ice Hockey teams like the EHC 1970, EC Hedos, the Munich Barons and EHC Red Bull Munich. Its versatility has been proved not only by hosting the Olympic Boxing in 1972 but also by the Basketball team of Bayern Munich which used the arena as their temporary venue between 2010 and 2011. ... (it) also provides a high level of public leisure activities..."
