The Berkeley
Library, named in honour of Bishop George
Berkeley, occupies one end of Fellow's
Square on the Trinity College campus.
The exterior of the building features
shuttered poured concrete and a number of
oriel windows with curved glass that allow
natural light into the building. The
"BUILTDUBLIN" website describes the
library's design, by Paul Koralek, as, "one of the most beautiful
buildings in Dublin and it’s a node for
campus activity, mediating much of the
traffic between Fellows’ Square and
College Park, as well as now providing the
main entrance for the library complex."
Adding that, "Koralek won an
international competition for the project,
which was held in 1960 and attracted 200
entries." In the image above you can see the "Sfera con Sfera" (sphere within a sphere) sculpture by the Italian sculptor Arnaldo Pomodora. |
