Behind the Tate
Britain Art Gallery and on the site of
the former Millbank Penitentiary, sits
the Millbank Housing Estate. This
Grade II and Grade II* Listed collection
of 16 buildings is an Arts & Crafts
style housing estate built between 1897
and 1902. The buildings are
arranged around a rectangular garden and
are constructed of red brick much of
which was salvaged from the demolition
of the penitentiary. The facades
also feature darker brick and render
and are adorned with Arts and Crafts
doorways and dormers.
The estate was
designed to accommodate 4330 people
largely displaced by the
redevelopment of the Clare Market
area of Holborn. The buildings
are all named after famous artists.
