Cantay House, Park End Street, Oxford, UK

Architect

Date Built
1901
Location
Park End Street
Description
This mixed-use building on Park End Street in Oxford was built as the Archer Cowley and Company's furniture packing and storage warehouse.  Stone panels in the gables at either end of the building say "Cantay" and "Depositories".

Apparently, the building was erected at a time when people were more mobile in terms of employment both within the country and abroad, so shipping and storage of furniture was a viable business.  Ideally located close to the two mainline railway stations, the building offered 4,000 square feet of storage space.  It featured floors and staircases of reinforced concrete and fireproof doors.

At street level there are retail spaces with large plate glass windows.  The corner of the building (seen below) was the original office which featured Burmese oak woodwork, a partly tiled facade and an engraved glass window.
