The Gold Cup - Formerly The Wellington

The Gold Cup pub on Stockport Road was once The Wellington.  I don't know when it changed its name or why it chose the name of a horse race a long way from Manchester.  It was never in Longsight but it was a pub with connections to Longsight not least of which was the fact that my mother used to be the cleaner there in the 1950s.  I remember spending a day there when I wasn't well enough to go to school.  I paticularly remember collecting a large number of metal bottle tops of various colours.  Bottle tops were a sort of down-market substitue for marbles and could be used in similar street games.  Mind you the caps that had buckled during the opening were of little use.

I recently heard from Sharon Kerigan, whose father John had been the landlord at the Wellington in the 60s.  In her message she said, "My Dad John Kerrigan was the licensee of what was then a Threlfalls Chesters pub (became Whitbread) in the late 60's until about end of 1971. I remember vividly living on Stockport Road as it was during the demolition of all the original terrace houses. I attended St Aloysius RC Primary School until we left to take up the Broughton in Salford."
