The New Victoria pub
sits on the east side of Stockport Road, not far from
the junction with Richmond Grove. In the 1950s
and 60s this section of Stockport Road looked quite
different. On the corner of Richmond Grove
(far left) was the Presbyterian Church and next to it
a garage. Beyond the garage was the Post Office
and then a row of 7 shops ending with William Astells,
greengrocers, on the corner of Park Avenue. In
the midst of the line of shops was the Victoria, a
rather non-descript pub with a frontage no larger than
the shops beside it. If you click on the link
below you can see the Victoria.
The Victoria Pub 1969 The red arrow in the aerial photograph below, taken in 1953, shows the location of the pub. The New Victoria is
obviously the successor of the original that was swept
away in the extensive redevelopment of the area in the
1970s.
However, I gather that, like almost
all of the pubs in Longsight, the New Victoria is no
longer open for business. The image below was
taken of the building in April of 2014.
